Fresh into the new year composer TheMysteryStudios (Manuel Uhl) surprises us with a new entry for the Game Music Cover Challenge. Of course we all know TheMysteryStudios from his great Youtube channel and his project "A tribute to MSX" where his goal is to create remakes of classic MSX game songs.

He sidestepped from his "tribute to MSX" project especially for this challenge, and created a cover of the Ending theme "In Return for Ambition" from Konami's platformer The Treasure of Usas. Of course that game features fantastic PSG music and Manuel created an extended and interesting remake of it.

To compose the track Manuel used Cubase with different plugins and VST instruments and also some very nice hardware:

  • Digital mixing consoles: Tascam TM-D 4000, Yamaha Promix 01 (as controller only)
  • Monitoring: Yamaha HS-80M (active speakers)
  • External USB Audio device from Tascam

You can look at the photo of his studio for a glimpse of his equipment. Manuel spent about 35 hours to create this song.

Manuel mailed some more info on the hardware and software he used to create his song; I added it to the newspost.

This is absolutely wonderful and full of lovely little hooks! It maintains the sweet mood of the original, but adds a lot to it with the new instruments and mix. Great!
