MRC 2k11 launch event - Event Eleven!

In a bit more than a month we are finally ready to launch the brand new installment of the MSX Resource Center, and we would like to invite you to its launch party! Although MSX Resource Center has been looking and functioning pretty much the same for almost 9 years now, behind the scenes a lot has been going on.

It all started with snout deciding to optimize and add many functionalities to the current website. Behind the scenes, this project (which was actually nothing but thorough maintenance) was called 'MRC2k7'. After having made this decision, snouts available amount of time decreased, the amount of feature requests increased and internally the discussion about what changes should be made to the website continued. As can also be read in this newspost, what started off as thorough maintenance referred to by the name of 'MRC2k7' slowly evolved to the plan of developing a completely new website, entirely replacing the current one, now also referred to as 'MRC2k2'. The project, now mainly led by Jorito (development) and Sander (layout), grew more ambitious and changed names several times - 'MRC2k8', 'MRC2k9' and 'MRC2k10'. Because it took so much time and at the same time, to our visitors, nothing seemed to change, it might have looked as though nothing was happening really.

But very soon, we are very proud to present the result of all these years of work. The launch date of the new website, commonly referred to as 'MRC2k11', is set. We, the MRC crew, really felt we had to celebrate this fact by organizing a launch party - Event Eleven, which will be organized on Saturday, October 15th, 2011. The day before the launch. And of course, we cordially invite anyone who has or has had interest in the MSX Resource Center, to join us in this celebration!

What can be expected of Event Eleven? We hope it will be a nice get together of MRC crew, MRC visitors and anyone they would like to bring with them. And please - don't hesitate to bring people, because it's mainly a party and even people who don't share our enthusiasm for the MSX are very likely to be able to enjoy themselves! Imagine a stylish venue in the center of Amsterdam, where drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and food are served and where people can catch up or get to know new people. But of course that's not enough! There will be much more, such as:

  • Public presentation of MRC2k11
  • VJ/chiptuneshow presented by The C-Men
  • Cosplay by Mashira Costumes
  • Arcade gaming
  • Open stage (see below)
  • Presentation of MSX projects MOAM, DEVA and Melancholia
  • Presentation of the results of the Event Eleven challenge (see below)
  • A pleasant nostalgic game (not a video game) with nice prizes
  • ...And who knows what more!

The open stage is a place any visitor of the event can use to show anything they want. Are you working on a new MSX project? Show us on the stage! Do you want to bring your own musical instrument to play some MSX tunes? Go ahead! The open stage - as the name implies - is the place for you to share with the rest of the visitors whatever you want to share! Do you know already you want to participate and need more information or our assistance? Contact us!

Then, the Event Eleven challenge. The rules are simple: anything goes and the results will be presented (and judged!) at the event. You may want to make a new MSX2 game by the name of SD Snatcher 2, or maybe you're good at baking cakes and want to make an MSX cake. Or are you good at drawing and you want to make a picture? Go ahead! Anything goes, as long as it's remotely connected to the event, MSX or the MRC. We don't take this challenge too seriously and probably you shouldn't either, it's all just for fun. The deadline is the (start of the) event itself, which is also the place to submit your entry.

The entrance to the party is totally free of charge and you might even get some free drinks and some nice goodies. The only requirement is that you let us know you are coming, because we would like to know how many people to expect beforehand. Please RSVP only if you're sure that you'll be there. For our non-Dutch visitors we'd like to add that this may be an excellent opportunity to visit Amsterdam. The venue is located in the city center and hotels are very near, so how about a nice weekend trip to The Netherlands and Amsterdam in particular?

Last but not least, we want to thank Konami, D4 Enterprise and RKLOK, who all support Event Eleven and will show this in various ways. You could even expect to get free goodies at the event. Allow yourself to be surprised!

Well now, let's sum it all up:

  • What: Event Eleven, MRC2k11 launch party
  • Where: Dokhuis Galerie, Plantage Doklaan 8-12, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  • When: Saturday, October 15th 2011, from 16:00 to 23:00
  • Entrance: Free of charge, but please RSVP

Thanks to Wolf, we can proudly present our Event Eleven announcement video. Be sure to watch it!

Hopefully, we can welcome you on the 15th of October!

Hi all,

I live in Amsterdam, and I have 3 sleeping places available.
My address is Wenckebachweg 12, it's in Amsterdam east.

Contact me if you are interested.

Anyway, nice initiative, looking forward to the party. Smile

enribar, the party location is close to Artis Zoo. When searching for a hotel, best option would be close to the zoo.

On the other hand, it´s the city centre, practically any hotel in the centre will do just fine. Public transport takes you almost anywhere Smile

Two good sites to check for available rooms are www.hotels.com and www.booking.com

Also, for the Dutch, if you worry about parking in Amsterdam, please consider to park your car at one of the many P+R parkings close to the city. For € 8,- you can park your car for 24 hours and you get up to 5 OV chip tickets which you can use to travel to the venue.

I have an idea... if it's possible: since MSX.org is a web based community would it make sense to actually stream the night so people outside NL could join in the event too? We could use a streaming service like http://www.stickam.com (interaction) or http://www.justin.tv/ (one way streaming)

enribar - The problem with locals is that they rarely (if ever) stay at hotels in their vicinity. If money is not a problem, the Okura will give you quite a treat.

If you want to keep a tighter budget, you might want to consider staying in a hotel not exactly in Amsterdam, but very close to it. You can get to Amsterdam in less than 15 minutes from Amstelveen, Haarlem or Zaandam, for instance. Even though the MRC crew will probably be very busy with the final preparations for the event, you can probably drive along to the venue with one of us. Problem is, those cities are quite boring compared to Amsterdam.

So euhm to others reading this: have you ever stayed in a hotel in Amsterdam? Any hotels you can (not) recommend?

Bitter balls

Why do us chaps in overalls

scarlet tarts in box and stalls
old tovercalls with parasols
yes, even moths have bitterballs

Melancholia could be a new music project by the famous Dutch composer (and crossdresser) Andries Minnaard ofcourse.

Nice detail about Andries. Our old babysitter is from Amsterdam and she actually knew Andries. They played in a band together. Some years ago, she talked about a strange man that was wearing women's clothes in her band. I asked her for fun if that guy's name was Andries Minnaard. She reacted "Yes! How do you know him?". So I told her the story about this "true MSX-legend".

Keep in mind that we'll have a fancy schedule for the event! It's not like an MSX fair where you can hop in at any hour and see the same things going on as your friends did who arrived hours earlier. There will be demonstrations, videos - and I'll pipe in some new notes too. So, if you miss a few hours, you actually will miss a few hours worth o' content.

@sama: Thanks. I've been looking too. To bad the parking of Artis has a starting fee of 25 euro Evil. Others close are a bit cheaper but still would end up to around 35 Euros. I have some colleagues from Amsterdam looking for options too. According to some it is a non parking permit area. Last night we checked, and there sure is space to park your car in the area around the venue (even in the street in front of the venue), but indeed, it will cost quite a lot of money to park your car there for a couple of hours.

Although not cheap, P1 Waterlooplein is probably your best option. If you want more bang for your buck take the 020 for € 20 deal at P1 Parking Amsterdam Centre. You can either walk to the venue from there (we do it all the time) or take a tram.

And if you don't want to pay anything, I suggest parking your car at the NDSM warf (FREE), take the boat to Central Station (FREE) and walk from there to the venue (FREE) Smile

I rather think you people should organize, if people are living close to eachother, or if people could pick people up on their way to A'dam, then you could split up a regular parking ticket in four (or five? or six? what car have you..).

for those who don't care about the price, I recommend nearby parking garage Markenhoven. Really, really, really nearby the venue and an abundance of parking space.
