TriloTracker 0.7.0 released

As of January 26th 2014 TriloByte's TriloTracker is released to the big audience. TriloTracker is an SCC+PSG music tracker for MSX based on Vortex Tracker II and FastTracker 2.

You might have heard about the beta testing program that coder huey initiated to get feedback of MSX musicians. Musical demonstrations of, amongst others, Wyz, Gryzor87 and John Hassink posted on Youtube and Soundcloud. All of them masterpieces on Konami's SCC.

Well, almost all of them. Some of you might have spotted test tracks by John Hassink made in TriloTracker which are not SCC but MSX Music. Indeed, TriloTracker is not just an SCC tracker anymore. An FM version was made as well.

All this has just been released to the big audience as version 0.7.0. The program isn't fully finished but the brains behind TriloTracker decided it was good enough to share it with all of you. New features that will be added in the future are wave morphing and samples, for example.

TriloTracker can be downloaded from the TriloTracker website, where you can also find the online documentation.

Happy composing!

@Mars: Just don't use SCC-I under BlueMSX as that, oddly, doesnt work. Wink

Any idea why it happens?

Maybe an initialisation problem of the SCC-I in blueMSX. Could also be related to TurboR in R800 mode.

Ashamed to admit that as a beta tester I haven't had the time or motivation to give TriloTracker a spin just yet. Hoping for a lot of new SCC tunes (and sounds!!) in the upcoming year.

From what I saw of the tracker so far it's really amazing. Keep up the good job, TriloByte!

After more checks, I guess it's a problem with the SCC-I initialisation and/or detection when using DOS2. That's not the only case where there seems to be a bug in DOS2 support by blueMSX.

Actually, TRiloTracker works also on MSX2/2+ when you add the MSX-DOS2 cartridge (or use the generic machine MSX2/2+ including MSX-DOS2) and it's the same problem with SCC-I.

There is also a bug in the debugger that crashes when you run msx 1 programs with split screen

Update: After a bug in the waveform morph routine I had to update the tracker. Please make sure to use the latest version.

Any plans to make the tracker open source? Just thinking aloud – as we've seen, this kind of projects don't age well, if the author loses interest and the sources are lost. A player routine would be equally useful, too, for integrating the tunes into your own game/demo.

As I am still working on the improvement and addition of new features I don't think it is wise to release it yet. Multiple forks of the same tracker would be a drag.

Anyway. A replayer is already in the works (but needs time). The idea for TT was to make a tracker for John to be included in our projects. Now that we have all basic features needed we can start using TT for our own projects too.

I can image that someone now needs some special features for their own projects. It's no problem to hack/change TT source codes for your own needs and keep it for yourself (for now). I am not interested in collaborations in further developent of the next TT versions. I simply don't have the time and motivation needed for these kind of things (You cannot image the number of things people think is WRONG or I must ADD or TT must DO).

Once I am done and satisfied. Everything will be out in the open and available if any one wants to make it an opensource project. Be asured there aren't much features left that I want to add. So that won't take years.

Tip for blueMSX users (workaround for the internal SCC-I bug when using DOS2) :

Insert in a cartridge slot the fake SCC-I rom that comes with RuMSX (SCCPLUS.ROM)

Enjoy the music ! Wink

how does that differ from using a "normal" SCC? ive been using a normal SCC in bluemsx for ages and it works...

On SCC, channels 4 and 5 are not separated; on SCC-I, they are separated.

Besides, SCC-I has its own RAM.

Well, if you want to use 5 separate waveforms in stead of 4 (on normal SCC channel 4 and 5 share the same waveform) you'd want to use the SCC-I.

It doesn't differ in TT. All SCC versions are the same in TT.
5th waveform is ignored. Even if you set it. It will affect the 4th.

I do not understand one thing: can I use Music Module + Philips keyboard and make music with TriloTracker?
In other words, can I compose music with TriloTracker + Philips keyboard connected via Music Module?

@enribar I don’t think it supports that, it’s a tracker and not a standalone synthesizer. However if you use the MIDI port and a MIDI controller keyboard you can do this with Synthesix (once I release it), and with MSX Synth as well.

@enribar: No. Not possible.

Probably this part from the newspost causes some confusion:
TriloTracker is not just an SCC tracker anymore. An FM version was made as well.

I made a hacked version for John that supports MSX-music. It is not official or available for download. Once I finish the next TT update I might be able to merge TT-FM with the changes from TT and make it available for download. Also TT-FM will not support a Phillips/Toshiba Keyboard.
