Amsterdam Sinfonietta – een internationaal strijkersgezelschap zonder dirigent – verrast elk jaar met een mooi album waarbij een of meerdere componisten of geografisch gebied centraal staat. Dit album is geheel gewijd aan twee grote Argentijnse componisten uit de vorige eeuw: Alberto Ginastera en Astor Piazzolla, die bij Ginastera in de leer is geweest. Dit mooie programma met een strijkarrangement van Vier seizoenen in Buenos Aires (van Leonid Desyatnikov) en het Concert voor strijkers van Ginastera wordt besloten met een compositie van Osvaldo Golijow voor twee strijkkwartetten en contrabas. Drie heel verschillende composities die elk op hun beurt aspecten van de Argentijnse ziel laten zien. Het showstuk van Golijow met veel expressie, het meesterlijke Concerto per corde van Ginastera (de ‘Bartók van de Pampa’s’) en natuurlijk de prachtige Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas van Piazzolla met een vleugje Vivaldi. Een mooi album met veel passie.

Amsterdam Sinfonietta performs ingenious programmes featuring well-known repertoire combined with commissions, new arrangements or rarely performed works.

On this brand new recording they combined Ginastera’s unique masterpiece ‘Concerto per corde’ with Golijov’s effectively written showpiece ‘Last Round’ and Piazzolla’s ‘Four Seasons’ in Leonid Desyatnikov’s arrangement. Candida Thompson listenend to Piazzolla’s own recordings of this work and decided to mirror the flexibility of his band by using a small string group consisting of 6 violins, 3 violas, 2 cellos and bass for their performances.
