In 2013 zorgde het tv-programma Vrije Geluiden met een optreden van ud-speler Mohamed Ahaddaf
uit Marokko voor een doorbraak in de muziekwereld. Net als z’n debuut (Nasim al Andalous) is
Spoken Soul weer een prachtige mix van jazz, latin en traditionele muziek uit Marokko. Het samenspel tussen de
pianist, drummer, contrabassist en de ud-speler is spannend met als hoogtepunt de duetten tussen de contrabas en de ud. (tekst: Stefan Koer)
From the cultural landscapes of Morocco, Sicily, Germany, France and the
Netherlands the Ahaddaf Quartet introduces both tradition and innovation
into one musical paradigm. Lead by the accomplished ud (lute) virtuoso
Mohamed Ahaddaf, the cross-cultural ensemble blends language, heritage and
storytelling; all combined into a rich and harmonious rendez-vous. The
Moroccan-Andalusian origine, combined with influences of jazz and Latin
music, is revealed through catching melodies, striking themes and
enchanting solos. The alchemy pf the lute and the double bass, intertwined
with percussion and piano, is the trademark of this unique sounding
quartet.
