Zitakula is een negenkoppige afrobeatband uit Amsterdam. Bij elkaar
gebracht door een liefde voor de grooves van Lagos en Addis Ababa, de
werelden van Fela Kuti en Mulatu Astatke. Zitakula brengt een explosieve
mix van Afrikaanse ritmes en melodieën en westerse jazz en funk, met
een scheutje Amazone. Analoge dansmuziek om het dak eraf te blazen.
The nine musicians of Zitakula have their roots in western funk, jazz, blues, samba and dance, and stir these sounds into a steaming brew with ingredients from Nigeria, Ghana and Ethiopia––taking their cue from both old heroes like Mulatu Astatke, and younger ones like Antibalas. Cooked up in a big hangar in the north of Amsterdam, and served scalding hot! On the 10th of April 2014 we released our self titled debut EP ‘Zitakula’.
Wonder where our name derives from? It is the exotic parakeet that thrives so well many European cities. Nice looking, lime green buggers with a sharp recognizable shout. These exotic residents of the Amsterdam Vondelpark encircle us weekly as we work our grooves. Officially they are Psitaculla Krameri. We are Zitakula.
